“Don’t wish it were easier, wish you were better”. I remember the first time I heard this I was doing a beachbody work out and the trainer said it while I was sweating my ass off and thinking to myself how can this be so hard (I definitely wished it was easier). As time went by I did that same program over and over about 4 or 5 times and by the last time I was doing it I knew that I was getting better, because it was easier.
That’s what I want to talk about, how can we get better so that we can stop wishing things were easier or different. I’m sure we’ve all done something or not done something that we knew was going to make our future selves pay the price. These are most often small actions that by themselves would never stand out, but when you compound them over time they become detrimental and we wake up years down the road asking ourselves why life is so hard?
If you want your life to be easier, get better. This is easier said than done and when you’re feeling that life is in a slump it can be hard to know where to start. For me it starts with doing the hard things that are required of you daily, quit differing until tomorrow what you can take action on today. Start taking action towards being the person you want to be. A good place to start is figuring out what that looks like. How do you want your life to look and if you truly believe what you’re saying to yourself why would you ever do anything that would take you in the opposite direction?
Recognize that sometimes there’s only so much you can do in one day, and that it’s going to take time. It takes doing the small things consistently to get where you want to go. You can’t work out for 8 hrs one day and then expect to wake up in fighting shape the next day. fitness like everything in life is the result of daily behaviours done consistently to get you where you want to go. Take action on the things that are available to you right now. Make a list of all the things that you can do right now to make a positive change in your life, list every single thing that you can do today or this week. Then start checking these off the list. We have to work from where we are, not where we think we should be. It’s ok to be where you are and want to change things, but don't make things worse by resisting the present. Take stock of where you’re at, and start working towards where you want to go, one baby step at a time.
The only way to change your life in the future is to change what you're doing today. Don't wait for things to be different because they wont be, do something today, anything that’s going to move you forward and then do something tomorrow and keep it up until you wake up and life doesn't seem so hard, in fact it’s easy, it’s fun, it’s exciting. Life doesn't get easier, life is life, but you can get better and that will make all the difference.
