Resources to simplifying your life
The last two years or so I have been seeking to live a more intentional life. I wanted my life to be simpler, I wanted to have more time and less stuff, I wanted to take inventory of my life and see if I was choosing the direction it was going. While looking for ways to simplify my life I came across a number of books, podcasts, and documentaries that have helped me figure things out along the way.
One of the books that got me started was The life-changing magic of tidying up by Marie Kondo. This book taught me to take a step back and look at the things I had in my life, what was I holding onto that I no longer used and was no longer bringing me joy. This book is a great starting point for those looking to declutter their space and life. This book is filled with practical guides to organization and decluttering and will make you think differently about your stuff.
Now that I had started on the path to simplify my life I was looking for any resources I could get my hands on. I was scrolling through documentaries and came across Minimalism the documentary. This film follows 2 guys that transformed their lives through embracing minimalism. Josh and Ryan (The Minimalists) went on tour sharing about how getting rid of most of their stuff and adopting a minimalist lifestyle changed their lives. When I first watched the documentary I was transitioning careers and being confronted by the fact that I no longer wanted the things I had been pursuing for a long time. The minimalists opened my eyes to a world I didn’t know existed and I have continued to listen to their advice on a range of topics.
One of my favourite podcasts is The Minimalists podcast. Josh and Ryan talk about their transition from the rat race to living life intentionally. They speak on a range of topics that have helped me address a lot of areas of my life. When you dive into intentional living it becomes about a lot more than just decluttering your closets. Even if you're not looking to adopt a minimalist lifestyle, I recommend giving these guys a listen.
When it comes to the area of clothes there’s a good blog called Project 333 that discusses capsule wardrobes. Project 333 is picking 33 items to wear for the next 3 months, in an effort to find out what your favourite items are and which ones you can go without. There's a number of helpful tips on the website so if you're looking to clean out your closet and start a capsule wardrobe this is a good place to start.
I’ve been slowly decluttering my own life and I constantly go through my stuff to see if there is anything that I’m no longer using. It takes time to go through your things and it takes time to allow yourself to let go, but if you consistently work at decluttering your space you'll reach a point where it gets easier and you might find that letting go of all those things has freed up a lot of space and energy. I wouldn't have gotten far in this journey if it wasn't for the resources that I've shared with you today.
Start living more intentionally today and if there’s something that you struggle with look for the people who have done what you want to do and are sharing their recipe.
